What is a Dental Hygienist
A dental hygienist is trained alongside a dentist at dental
school for two years. Their main role is to provide professional
cleaning and polishing of teeth and education on how to keep
mouths as healthy as possible. They can advise on the best
toothbrush and brushing technique. Hygienist can also take
x-rays to help monitor dental health.
Prevention and the Dental Hygienist
A large part of the daily routine of a dental hygienist
is cleaning and polishing but also they can place special
seals on posterior teeth (fissure sealant) and fluoride gels
on teeth.
Sensitive Teeth
Sensitivity can be due to incorrect brushing technique.
A dental hygienist can help resolve this problem as well
as applying desensitising agents.
If your teeth are very sensitive the hygienist can give
you a local anaesthetic (injection) to help with pain control
before cleaning.
