I have kept away from the dentist for over 40 years despite rotting painful teeth and gum disease. I was just too scared to even cross the threshold of a dental practice and book an appointment. The thought of dental treatment involving injections and drilling made my stomach churn. For a few years I tried DIY dentistry trying to hang on to my remaining wobbly front teeth. Then I heard about The Wand technique for numbing teeth. Soon after I discovered that The Wand treatment was available at Wallasey Village Dental Practice.

When I telephoned the dental Practice the staff were amazingly helpful and encouraging. They helped by explaining everything and putting me at ease. It took a few phone calls but I eventually booked an appointment. The first visit went so smoothly that I don’t know why I had put it off for so long. Now I’m well on my way to having the perfect smile I always wanted. I have also recommend Wallasey Village Dental Practice to my friends and family as they truly are a caring Dental Practice

Many type of floss/tape are available waxed, unwaxed, flavoured and also floride impregnated. Select approximately 50cm of your favourite floss. Wind the ends around your middle fingers of both hands, so that a short distance is left between them.

Insert the floss between two teeth onto the gum line. Sweep up and down the tooth on one side then the other. Repeat this action between all teeth, using you r fingers wind to a fresh portion of floss each time.

Flossing takes practise so persistence is essential. If flossing between back teeth is proving too difficult using flossers or flossettes may help.

Fluoride occurs naturally in our drinking water and some foods. Where fluoride is present in our drinking water at a certain concentration it confers a benefit to the tooth such that the enamel surface of the tooth is much more resistant to tooth decay.

Research studies of the teeth of children living in areas where the concentration of fluoride in the drinking water is very low, show that these children suffer more decay, toothache and extractions than children from an area where the drinking water contain optimum fluoride levels. Children in areas such as the Crewe and Nantwich area and Birmingham have almost half the levels of tooth decay than children from Liverpool, Birkenhead and Manchester.

It is not just the children that benefit, adults who have drunk water containing the right level of fluoride, enjoy better dental health than those who have never done so.

The concentration of fluoride in water can be easily topped up to provide the best results for teeth. The people responsible are the water authorities and health authorities. By writing to these authorities and our MP we should be able to help decrease tooth decay in the future.

In practice fluoridated water means: -

Less toothache

Fewer general anaesthetics for tooth extraction

More children keeping their permanent teeth into adulthood

Better looking teeth because they are not affected by decay.

For healthy teeth and gums a small headed medium/soft textured manual or electric toothbrush is required along with fluoridated toothpaste. A pea-sized amount of toothpaste is all that is required.

Start in either the upper or lower arch and work round from the back left-hand molars to the front then around to the right-hand molars, cleaning a small area at a time. Clean the margin where tooth meets gum very carefully, on the cheek side then the tongue side. Lastly finish by brushing biting surfaces before moving onto the other arch.

Toothbrushing should last about two minutes, so to help spend the correct amount of time count six seconds for each tooth.

Using a disclosing tablet is a good way of checking your brushing technique. Available from most chemists, a disclosing tablet contains a food dye, which will stain plaque and debris so it is easily visible and can be brushed away.
